St. Moritz lies on the south side of the Alps, in the Engadine Valley (6,000 feet above sea level). St. Moritz is influenced by three cultures: those of the German-speaking majority of its residents, the romanish-speaking population of the Engadine and the nearby italians. The highest mountains of the eastern alps are in the Upper Engadin (Mt. Bernina 13,000 ft.).
Today St. Moritz has ca. 5'000 residents (to which must be added ca. 3'000 employees in the season). There are 5'634 beds in 40 traditional hotels as well as 7'500 beds in holiday apartments, of which about 3’500 are rented out. Almost 60 % of the hotel beds are in the 4 and 5 star categories. St. Moritz has traditionally an above-average bed occupancy rate. The summer compared to the winter overnight stays are roughly 2/3 to 1. In a good year St. Moritz can count on around 250'000 visitors spending up to 1.2 milion overnight stays.
Skiing and Winter Activities
St. Moritz recently had more visitors in summer than in winter although they stay for a much shorter time, but it is obvious that winter still remains the more important season for business. The assurance of snow and good weather, thanks to the height and southern aspect, provide ideal conditions for a long season and a unique wide range of opportunities offered to visitors, such as: Olympic ski pists, bob-sleigh run (with passenger rides), Cresta Run (for toboggans), horse races, greyhound races, Concours Hippique, Gourmet Festival, Snow & Symphony, cricket and polo tournaments as well as winter golf, curling, ”Engadin Ski Marathon” (cross country skiing).
In 1928 and 1948 St. Moritz was the host of the Winter Olympic Games. Numerous ski and bobsleigh world championships, as well as other important winter sports events, together with the famous names of its guests, have all contributed to the unique worldwide fame and prestigious position of St. Moritz. To protect its name from misuse, St. Moritz took in 1986 the step of protecting itself as a brand-name in about 50 different countries - the first place in the world to do so.
Glamour
The actual attractions of St. Moritz seems to lie in the agreeable harmony of the Upper Engadine landscape with its 25 mountain lakes, the famous “Champagne climate” and intensive sunshine. The health spa, the Swiss National Park and - last but not least - the cosmopolitan visitors, 70 % of whom come from abroad, also deserve mention. The name “St. Moritz” is today a synonym worldwide for “chic, elegance and class”! The name stands for style, tradition and quality and its success proves that: St. Moritz keeps its promise. | | |
